How can Lava Mae share their mission of radical hospitality and hard-earned insights?

LAVAMAE^X MOBILE HYGIENE TOOLKIT

LavaMae^X is a non-profit organization that brings “Radical Hospitality” to those who are moving through homelessness in the San Francisco area by providing an unexpected level of care, promoting dignity, and rekindling hopes and optimism through mobile hygiene service.

LavaMae^X began with retrofitting decommissioned MUNI buses to offer free mobile showers in 2014 in response to the shortage of public shower facilities available within the City. Inspired by their mission, SITELAB began collaborating with LavaMae^X in 2015.

In response to LavaMae^X’s tremendous local impact and global interest, LavaMae^X brought SITELAB in to assist in creating their “DIY Mobile Hygiene Tool Kit” to share their learnings and increase capacity for services around the world.

The Toolkit provides a clear roadmap of best practices; connection to a community network of like-minded service providers, social entrepreneurs, and innovators to share and troubleshoot ideas; visibility to attract local partners, volunteers, and donors; and, opportunity to share their innovations and help others succeed. In developing the Toolkit, SITELAB facilitated workshops with LavaMae^X to help essentialize and organize the content.

Through this work, the Toolkit developed as a source of coaching and inspiration as well as information. SITELAB designed the document to reflect LavaMae^X’s focus on people — guests, volunteers, and staff — with portraits and photo inserts combined with a clean, accessible style.
