Stonestown

How can a traditional American mall transform into an integrated neighborhood?

STONESTOWN

Located at the heart of San Francisco’s western neighborhoods, Stonestown Galleria has served as a successful retail center for decades and continues to evolve with the ever-changing nature of retail.

SITELAB leads the urban design effort to transform 30 acres of underutilized surface parking lots into an integrated mixed-use town center made up of a mix of housing, new retail, and open spaces that will bridge the gap between the mall and its neighbors, while bringing new complementary experiences to Stonestown.

Crafted with a team of diverse collaborators and informed by ongoing community conversations, SITELAB’s concept plan delivers up to 3,500 new homes, approximately 200K square feet of new shops, commercial space, neighborhood amenities, and 6 acres of diverse parks, plazas, and green spaces.

San Francisco’s Stonestown Mall Could Get 3,500 New Homes Under Revised Redevelopment Plan

From parking lot to 2,930 housing units: See what the transformation of Stonestown could look like

The public realm envisions linking the mall with new homes through a series of new indoor-outdoor experiences, reviving the spirit of community gathering spaces when Stonestown took shape as an open-air retail promenade in the 1950s. New experiences include a new lively main street conveniently close to transit, a town square that will serve as the new home for the weekly farmers’ market, and a generous green linear park that reimagines welcoming arrival from all sides of the project -- all of which will be connected by an enhanced street network prioritizing pedestrian safety and walkability. This long term vision presents an opportunity to revitalize and celebrate Stonestown as a unique neighborhood town center, re-imagined for the future.
