SFMTA AFFORDABLE HOUSING
In response to San Francisco’s affordable housing shortage, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) joined the City’s Public Land for Housing Program to support citywide efforts to study creative housing opportunities.

SFMTA identified five small-scale surface parking lots to study for potential feasibility for both market rate and affordable housing projects. The lots are located in the Castro, Hayes Valley, and West Portal neighborhoods and range from approximately 4,000 sf to 12,000 sf.
Together with SFMTA and David Baker Architects, SITELAB explored development feasibility according to existing planning code, as well as under potential alternate scenarios. SITELAB provided site analysis and context mapping, including demographic, parking, and transit studies, and strategy consulting for the development of the five surface lots. SITELAB synthesized the findings into a clean and easily navigable final report documenting the process, outcomes, and recommendations based on detailed design, real estate, and construction studies for each site.
